Leroy Marsh
Head Football Coach

Coach Leroy Marsh has coached at Munster High School since 1973; the head football coach since 1980. During that time, Coach Marsh has won numerous coaching awards and has been asked to be a football clinician many times through the years. In 2004 Coach Marsh was selected as Head Coach of the North team in the IFCA All-Star game, defeating the heavily favored South 23-21.

Coach Marsh is a graduate of East Chicago Roosevelt High School where he was a three sport athlete and an all-state player. Coach Marsh went on to compete in college and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Augustana College. Coach Marsh was a four year starter at Augustana and was a team captain his senior year. He earned honors in football as an all-conference and small college All-American player.In 1978 he earned a Masters degree in secondary education from Purdue University. He is married to his wife Jamie and has two sons, Ryan (deceased) and Christopher. Coach Marsh also has two grandchildren, Patrick and Serena.



Bob Shinkan
Special Teams Coordinator / Outside Linebackers

Coach Shinkan has coached at Munster High School since 1975. He has been coaching football for since 1982, the an assistant on the varsity staff since 1985. Coach Shinkan is a 1971 graduate of Munster High School where he played football and baseball. Coach Shinkan is a graduate of Ball State University where he played baseball his freshman year and received his Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in 1975. He went on to receive his Masters degree in secondary education from Purdue University in 1985. In his tenure at Munster High School, Coach Shinkan has coached many sports. These include girls track, volleyball, and boys and girls basketball. Coach Shinkan has also coached baseball at MHS since 1981, head baseball coach since 1984. In 2006, Coach Shinkan was named the Ball State Alumni Baseball Coach of the Year. He is married to his wife Laura and has two boys, Scott, and Michael.



Tony Bartolomeo
Offensive Coordinator / Running Backs Coach
Coach Bart has coached football since 1999.  Before coming to Munster, he coached at Lowell, Crown Point and was offensive coordinator for Merrilville High School. Coach Bart graduated from Merrillville High School where he lettered 7 times in football and track.  After high school, Coach Bart attended Ball State University where he continued his football career by playing defensive back for the Cardinals and earned a Bachelors degree in secondary education. Coach Bart currently teaches health and earth science at  Munster High School.  He is married to his wife, Angela, and has two sons, Tony and Rocco.

Brian Vance
Defensive Coordinator/Defensive Line Coach
Coach Vance has coached football since 1999; the freshman defensive coordinator at Munster from 2000-2005 and varsity line coach since 2006. Before coming to Munster, Vance coached the offensive and defensive lines at River Forest High School. Coach Vance graduated from Lowell High School where he lettered 11 times in football, wrestling, and track. He was the captain of the football and track teams. After high school, Vance attended Wabash College where he started two years at defensive tackle and earned a Bachelors degree in fine art. After attending Wabash, Vance earned teaching certification and a Masters degree in secondary education from Indiana University. Coach Vance currently teaches art at Wilbur Wright Middle School and coaches middle school wrestling and varsity track at Munster High School. He is married to his wife, Brooke and has one son, Brady

Tom Largus
Offensive Line Coach
Coach Largus has coached football at Munster High School since 1990. He graduated from Munster in 1974 where he played both football and baseball. He was a Team captain, all conference and all state player for the Mustangs in 1973. He represented the Mustangs in the 1974 Indiana Football North South All-star Game. Coach Largus continued his football career at the University of Indianapolis as a 4 year letter winner and a 2 year starter, playing a variety of offensive line positions. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration in 1978. After becoming involved and eventually taking over the family printing business in 1980, he started coaching with the Mustangs and Coach Marsh in 1990. He and his wife Dawn live in Highland and between them have 5 children. Tara, Regina, TG, Ashley, and Christina. Coach Largus's last year as a player at Munster was Coach Marsh's first year as a young assistant coach for Hall of Fame Coach John Friend. Coach Largus enjoys bicycling as a hobby.


Morgan Nolan
Inside Linebackers Coach
Morgan Nolan joined the Mustang football staff in 2007 as a freshman assistant.  In 2008 he moved up to coach linebackers and coordinate the JV defense.  He is a social studies teacher at Munster High School. Coach Nolan graduated in 2003 from Bedford North Lawrence High School, lettering in Football and Swimming. He graduated from Wabash College in 2007 where he competed in swimming, and powerlifting. He resides in Merrillville and is single.

Joe Helmer
Defensive Secondary Coach
Coach Helmer joined the Mustang coaching staff in 2007.  Prior to coaching the defensive backs, Coach Helmer was a star player for the Highland Trojans and went onto play football at St. Joseph College.  Coach Helmer is an active member for the town of Munster's youth sports programs, where he coaches football, basketball, and baseball.

Bob Fisher
Tight Ends Coach

Coach Fisher is a welcomed addition to the Mustang staff. Coach Fisher has a wealth of experience and knowledge of the tight end position from playing in college at Southern Methodist University and in the NFL with the Chicago Bears. Coach Fisher resides in Munster with his wife, Sally, and children, Mike and Rizzie.



John Doherty
Head Athletic Trainer

Mr. Doherty has been the head athletic trainer at Munster High School since 1985. He is a graduate of St. John's Prep in Danvers, MA where he earned the Xaverian Award for being a three sport student trainer and manager for four years. He was inducted into St. John's athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. Mr. Doherty went on to the University of Notre Dame where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in December 1981. While there he was a student, then staff athletic trainer working with all sports but primarily the football and basketball teams. During that time he was a member of the 1977 National Championship football team, the 1978 and '79 Cotton Bowl Champions and the 1981 Sugar Bowl team. In 1984, he earned a Master's degree in physical therapy from the University of Indianapolis. John and his wife, the former Susan Brosseau, reside in Munster with their children Patrick, Michael John, and Maureen. In 2004, Mr. Doherty was chosen to be the head athletic trainer for the North team in the Indiana High School All-Star Football game.



Matt Backs
Head Freshman Coach
Coach Backs has been coaching football at Munster since 1997, and has been the head freshman football coach since 1999. Before coming to Munster, Backs coached baseball at Staunton H.S. in Staunton IL., and coached freshman baseball and basketball at TF North H.S. in Calumet City. Backs graduated from Wilmot Union High School in Wilmot, WI where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Backs played college baseball at McHenry County College and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Coach Backs earned his bachelors degree from Illinois State University in 1993 and earned his masters degree from Olivet Nazarene University in 2004. Coach Backs has been teaching at Wilbur Wright Middle School since 1995 and also enjoys coaching the 8th grade boys and girls basketball teams. Coach Backs has been coaching baseball in Munster since 1996 and is the J.V. baseball coach. Coach Backs is married to his wife Annie and they have two children Tyler and Haylee.

Matt Kalwasinski
Freshman Assistant
Coach Kalwasinski is the current defensive coordinator for the 9th grade team. He has been with the Munster Football Program since 2002. Coach Kalwasinski graduated from Munster High School in 1995 and from Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN in 2000 with a Bachelors Degree in Social Studies Secondary Education. He teaches Psychology and US History at Munster High School. He is married to his wife Mandy.

Jason Grunewald
Freshman Assistant
Coach Grunewald returns to the Munster to assist with the freshman team. Coach Grunewald was an All-State safety for Munster in 2002 and All-Conference and All-Area in 2003. He continued his playing career at Valparaiso University, where he was a two year starter for the Crusaders. Coach Grunewald currently teaches physical education at Wilbur Wright Middle School.

Dan Gelarden
Head 8th Grade Coach
Dan Gelarden has been with the Munster football program since 1997. Coach Gelarden currently is the head 8th grade coach at Wilbur Wright, a post which he has had since 2000. Gelarden is a graduate of Evansville Mater Dei High School where he participated in football, wrestling, and baseball. As a senior, Coach Gelarden was selected all area at defensive tackle in football, while winning two regional championships. Competing as a heavyweight wrestler, Coach Gelarden’s team was ranked number one in Indiana and recognized nationally by USA Today. Coach Gelarden graduated from Indiana University in Bloomington and earned a Master's degree from Indiana as well. Gelarden has been an outstanding science teacher at Wilbur Wright Middle School since 1997. In addition to coaching football, Coach Gelarden currently is the Head Wrestling Coach at Munster High School. Much of his spare time is spent working with the Junior Mustang Wrestling program, which he created for elementary aged boys in Munster. He is married to wife Jolene and has a son and daughter.

Josh Herold
8th Grade Assistant

Coach Herold has been involved with the Munster Football program since 2005. Herold is a 1999 graduate of Centerville High School in Centerville, Indiana where he participated in football, cross country, and swimming. He attended Ball State University and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a B.S. degree in Social Studies Education in 2003. Herold teaches Ancient and Modern World History at Munster High School. He is single and lives in Crown Point
